Nantucket Garden Club Daffodil Show

General/Column One Response

Garden club members
bustle around the green house,
assisting children entering
daffodils by explaining
divisions, classifications
and color codes.

They pour through notebooks,
text books and bulb catalogs. Mrs.
Maury helps my daughter find
the name of a peachy double
she’s uncertain of; division
four, Delnashaugh.

Mrs. Malavase shows
Skye how to clock her
entries by gently
turning the stem until
the verticals petals
point at 12 and 6.

They beam their passion while
instructing her on staging; using
boxwood sprigs and scissors
to support daffodils
in their most favorable pose.

They spritz and coo
give tips and compliments
encourage and straighten
deftly preparing
those daffodils until they show
their best selves to the world.

I strongly suspect
they’re gifted at raising children.
